Load Management

We help DSOs monitor and understand complex power flows through today’s distribution networks. Building detailed load profiles, we help reduce load-related reinforcement and expenditure.
Load patterns on the electricity network are becoming more complex as penetration of low carbon technologies (LCTs) increases across the distribution grid. With customer behaviours evolving fast, Distribution System Operators (DSOs) are under pressure to accommodate increasingly dynamic, unpredictable power flows.
We’re here to help DSOs see the complete picture in a changing world. Our smart devices have gathered tens of millions of hours of highly granular monitoring data on LV circuits across the UK and Ireland. That information gives us an unmatched picture of load patterns and their impact on network performance.
Our data-driven insights enable DSOs to implement proactive load management strategies, reduce load-related expenditure, optimise the health of their network assets to realise bigger returns, and pre-empt future problems.
Insights gained from LV circuit load profiles enable operators to prioritise interventions such as meshing to increase performance and asset life.
Our data-driven approach helps inform DSO connection strategies, support decarbonisation goals and identify Net Zero opportunities.
Building a clear picture of network load patterns helps Operators identify early-stage issues before they escalate into costly faults.
Our forensic picture of power flow trends over time through cables, transformers and substation assets, supports optimised planning.
By the end of ED1, Kelvatek’s PRESense advanced LV monitors will be installed at 5,000 of Electricity North West’s most populous ground-mounted substations supplying around 1.1 million customers.
Through the ED2 period, tactical installation of PRESense will continue on LV circuits to help deliver savings to customers through the continuation of the ‘Connect and Manage’ programme, measuring the risk profile of circuits, their capacity, and their ability to connect and balance load optimally.

Combining advanced analytics with the vast experience of our technical support team, Sapient transforms real-time power flow and load information collected from our smart devices in the field into actionable insights. Enabling operators to optimise network performance, manage customer demand and support proactive network planning.
Learn more about SapientWe’ve been working in collaboration with Network Operators across the UK & Ireland for over two decades to support their strategic goals and help them pivot successfully to a low carbon future.
Kelvatek acted as the key partner on the LCNI Tier 2 project Smart Street. This project proved that controllable switching devices, when integrated into the Network Management System (NMS), will allow the optimisation of voltage levels so that both customers’ appliances and the Electricity North West network run as efficiently as possible.
Following the successful innovation project, Electricity North West was awarded Innovation Roll-out Mechanism (IRM) funding for the targeted deployment of the Smart Street system to 180 distribution substations and the associated LV networks.
Optimisation software, part of the NMS, will use real-time measurement and configuration data to manage the voltage and power flows on the Low Voltage (LV) network. Kelvatek's Weezap and Relink technology will be installed as part of the IRM to enable the optimisation software to autonomously manage the network.
