Fault & Load Management
Our industry-leading solutions and services give our clients the power to accelerate network performance for a sustainable future.
Our industry-leading solutions and services give our clients the power to accelerate network performance for a sustainable future.
Today’s energy networks are becoming more complex and difficult to manage. Distribution Network Operators are facing increased challenges to meet governments’ sustainability targets as the shift to renewable power sources is mirrored by growing consumer adoption of low carbon technologies.
At Kelvatek, we’re focused on helping our clients maximise returns from their current investments while creating new solutions to solve future challenges.
Our intelligent solutions for fault management, cable health and load management enable Distribution Network Operators to optimise the performance, reliability and sustainability of their infrastructures.
Harnessing our cutting-edge capabilities in data analytics, AI and machine learning, we give our clients greater visibility and control over their networks.
We’re leaders in fault location and management – helping to prevent and repair faults, keep customers on supply and maximise returns on network investments.
We help monitor and understand complex power flows through distribution networks, minimise load-related reinforcement, and prepare for tomorrow’s challenges.
Our intelligent monitoring capabilities optimise electricity cable asset replacement strategies, keeping customers on supply, reducing penalties and pre-empting costly problems.
Our advanced data and analytics capabilities help our clients unlock the potential from their data, putting them firmly in control of their networks and supporting strategic decision-making.
Our devices provide an early indication of load issues and pre-fault behaviour, allowing Operators to minimise unscheduled interruptions.
We help reduce operational costs for Operators with faster fault-finding, repairs and more efficient deployment of equipment and resources.
We help Operators ensure their networks have the resilience to meet tomorrow’s challenges and reduce the costs of decarbonisation.
Our solutions enable staff to work more efficiently, make fewer site visits and effect repairs more safely, all while getting customers back on supply quickly.

By the end of ED1, Kelvatek’s PRESense advanced LV monitors will be installed at 5,000 of Electricity North West’s most populous ground-mounted substations supplying around 1.1 million customers.
Through the ED2 period, tactical installation of PRESense will continue on LV circuits to help deliver savings to customers through the continuation of the ‘Connect and Manage’ programme, measuring the risk profile of circuits, their capacity, and their ability to connect and balance load optimally.

10,000,000+ instances of fault activity captured on LV networks
20,000,000+ hours of LV circuit load profile data captured and analysed
2,000+ permanent faults prevented on UK & Irish networks annually
Did you know that we undertake all stages of product delivery in-house, including research & development, engineering, manufacturing, assembly, calibration, and delivery?
We have recently been accredited with Made in Britain status which is the official mark of British manufacturing. We are extremely proud of our Made in Britain status as it highlights our commitment to developing and producing a high standard of products for the UK electricity industry.

Research is central to our success at Kelvatek. We have invested and developed world-class facilities across our different sites globally.
Our unique test LV facilities comprise of dedicated cable health labs and a live electricity network. These facilities enable us to monitor faults from their infancy, right through to a permanent fault condition.
The network is constructed of multiple cable types that can be arranged in a wide variety of configurations. Faults can be added to the network in a specially constructed fault trough which allows us to investigate faults mid-cable, at joints and at cable ends. This also allows us to evaluate the behaviours of faults in different ground conditions.
To date, this has allowed us to capture more than 20 million burst of fault activity and countless hours of early life fault development data.
We also manufacture our products in-house at our own dedicated 60,000 sq. ft. factory, based in Northern Ireland.
Seamless integration of all phases of research & development, engineering, manufacture, assembly, calibration and delivery ensures full control over product quality and customer service.
Cybersecurity is a vital aspect of today’s connected world.
Kelvatek’s Sapient service is Cyber Essentials certified and our information security management system is built on best practices of ISO27001. Our customers can be sure that their data is in safe hands.
Our in-depth analysis of fault data captured on a UK DNO’s LV network triggered a change in the customer’s operational practices, generating savings of more than £1m per annum from their current fleet.
Analysis of fuse rupture patterns and intervals revealed that subsequent fuse ruptures were most likely to happen in the few days following the initial rupture. This indicated that the greatest value from Bidoyng reclosing devices would be obtained by fitting equipment within the first few days of the initial activity, and that successful execution of fault location was key to unlocking benefits around unplanned LV outages.
These findings have led to the customer modifying its previous equipment policy of installing an Bidoyng after two ruptures within 30 days. Adoption of a proactive ‘first fuse’ policy has avoided an estimated 42% of repeat supply interruptions, contributing directly to significant operational savings and reduced disruption to customers.
Kelvatek acted as the key partner on the LCNI Tier 2 project Smart Street. This project proved that controllable switching devices, when integrated into the Network Management System (NMS), will allow the optimisation of voltage levels so that both customers’ appliances and the Electricity North West network run as efficiently as possible.
Following the successful innovation project, Electricity North West was awarded Innovation Roll-out Mechanism (IRM) funding for the targeted deployment of the Smart Street system to 180 distribution substations and the associated LV networks.
Optimisation software, part of the NMS, will use real time measurement and configuration data to manage the voltage and power flows on the Low Voltage (LV) network. Kelvatek Weezap and Relink technology will be installed as part of the IRM to enable the optimisation software to autonomously manage the network.
View datasheetOver the last 20 years Kelvatek’s expert team of engineers, data scientists and PHD specialists have been developing innovative methods of analysing the very complex power flows that happen in the instants surrounding a fault.
We have accumulated over 50 working years of dedicated research in developing and training algorithms that can reliably and consistently analyse, classify, and translate high-volume, deeply complex data into actionable information for clients.
We sort through terabytes of waveform data captured via our proprietary triggering algorithms, aligned with phases and locations to produce a distance to fault, often before the first fuse operation.
