About RFI and the 5-Year Framework

RFI, established in July 2001 and wholly owned by FS Italiane, is the owner and manager of Italy’s national rail network. RFI is a key player in the Italian rail industry, providing essential signalling, maintenance, and operational services, as well as operating train ferries between the Italian Peninsula and Sicily. Since December 2005, RFI has managed nearly 1000 km of high-speed rail lines, with 500 trains per day running at speeds of up to 300 km/h.

The 5-year framework agreement with RFI is a comprehensive design and build contract. Camlin Rail is responsible for the entire lifecycle of the PanVue systems, from design and installation to commissioning and training. This turnkey project ensures that RFI receives a complete solution, including power, communications, server implementation, and software training.

The PanVue System: A Revolutionary Solution

Our PanVue system is part of our TrainVue suite of monitoring products, representing a ground-breaking advancement in pantograph condition monitoring. Using stereo cameras to capture high-resolution images, PanVue creates a 3D digital twin of the pantograph head. This fully automated machine vision system, the first of its kind in the industry, allows for real-time assessment of pantograph conditions using advanced imaging and machine learning techniques. The system alerts users automatically if a pantograph is out of specification, thereby protecting against damage and optimizing maintenance schedules.

Benefits of PanVue for RFI

The deployment of the PanVue system provides RFI with a robust toolset to enhance operational performance. By offering a cost-effective solution combined with advanced analytics, PanVue helps improve operational decision-making, maximizes rolling stock fleet availability, and ensures safe, real-time monitoring without the need to withdraw trains from service.

PanVue Installation Roll Out

Camlin Rail has completed the installation of eight PanVue systems for RFI to date, in Rome, Florence, Palermo, Naples and Reggio Calabria. As we continue to roll out the remaining systems, we are dedicated to supporting RFI in maintaining the high standards of Italy’s rail network.

Looking Forward

Giuseppe Camposeo, Project Manager, Global Services in Camlin Rail said: “The successful completion of these initial installations sets the stage for the continued deployment of the remaining PanVue systems. We are proud to contribute to the modernisation of Italy’s rail infrastructure and look forward to further strengthening our partnership with RFI.

“We will provide further updates as we progress with this exciting project, enhancing the safety, efficiency, and reliability of Italy’s rail network with our state-of-the-art PanVue systems.”
