Odorant Monitoring

Online Odorant Monitoring for Gas Distribution Networks

Overview

Accurate, reliable, cost-effective monitoring of individual odorant components.

Natural gas is odourless, requiring odorant to be added to gas networks to give a warning of potential gas leaks or issues with appliances. Odorant is also required for biomethane and hydrogen networks.

It is vital to ensure the correct amount of odorant is added to the network, and that it is present at the required concentration over the whole gas grid. Too little odorant means gas leaks may not be detected, putting lives in danger. Too much odorant can create a false sense of alarm as well as additional cost for gas networks and their customers.

BioSpec Rhino is an automated online system that accurately monitors individual components of odorant and odorant blends used in the UK, Europe and worldwide. It provides a real-time view of odorant composition on the gas network, giving assurance that odorant components are present at required concentration.

BioSpec Rhino Benefits

Actionable pointer

Accurate, individual measurements

BioSpec Rhino measures all common odorants including TBM, DMS and THT. By individually measuring each component within an odorant blend, it can also monitor odorant fade at individual component level.

Driving greater cost efficiency

Online monitoring provides a cost-effective alternative to subjective manual sampling by rhinologists and laboratory testing. It also offers savings by using less odorant at the injection point and avoiding over-odorisation on other parts of the network.

Putting customer safety first

24/7 assurance that correct odorant levels are added to the network ensures that a safe product is delivered to the customer. BioSpec Rhino also measures other contaminants that may impact the integrity of the network, such as hydrogen sulphide or terpenes

Ready for a renewable future

BioSpec Rhino is ideal for odorant monitoring of natural gas, biomethane, hydrogen gas or blends. It’s thus a suitable solution as networks increase the amount of renewable gas on their grids or move to 100% renewables.

Automated Odorant Monitoring

Trained rhinologists typically make manual checks at different points on the gas network, with samples also being sent to specialized laboratories. This process only offers a subjective snapshot, and lab results can take several days to be returned.

BioSpec Rhino is an automated system that performs 24/7 monitoring of gas odorant levels.

Harnessing our expertise in optical spectroscopy measurement technology, it provides continuous assurance that safety regulations are complied with. Offering a more cost-effective monitoring approach compared with manual and laboratory measurement, BioSpec Rhino gives operators the potential to optimize the volume of odorant injected into the gas grid.

Flexible, Future-Proofed Solution

Together with natural gas, many networks also carry other forms of gas such as biomethane and hydrogen in order to help decarbonize the gas grid. BioSpec Rhino offers a future proofed solution that can accurately measure odorant levels in natural gas, biomethane and hydrogen.

Biogas contains many impurities which must be removed before biomethane is injected into the gas grid. Hydrogen from industrial sources can also have impurities.

As well as odorants, BioSpec Rhino also measures a range of other components such as hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, ketones and terpenes that can impact the grid’s integrity or result in non-compliant gas reaching customers.
