Failures in tap changers account for over 20% of transformer failures, often resulting in fire or explosions.

Arcing, heating, mechanical frictions and wear are the key factors leading to OLTC failures. While the condition of tap changer can be assessed with regular testing, this is often time consuming for asset managers and costly.

Benefits of monitoring OLTC with TOTUS

By monitoring online the tap position, OLTC temperature, Dissolved Gas Analysis, motor torque and load, asset managers can detect anomalies at the earliest stage and plan proper action and testing. This drives more efficient maintenance, allowing the time periods between maintenance to be stretched.

Although Vacuum OLTC technologies can provide significant maintenance advantages, it is not free from failures and issues, due to poor vacuum, poor internal clearance between live parts, moisture contamination, mechanical failures and failures in the CT shorting switch.
